Wildfire recovery

Returning and rebuilding after wildfire

Coordinate official return instructions, property access, ash and smoke assessment, water questions and recovery documents.

HAUSE editorial guide Updated October 11, 2026

Follow current notices for the exact community and property.

Separate structure, ash, water and contents assessments.

Keep return-to-use decisions tied to responsible parties.

Community return is the first decision

Remain outside an evacuation zone until the responsible authorities say you may return. A community reopening notice may include restrictions on roads, utilities, water or individual properties. Read the notice for your exact area and keep a current copy; a neighbouring community’s permission does not extend to your address.

Plan the trip around what is actually available: road access, fuel, communications, accommodation, medications and support for pets. If someone else is checking the property, give them the same access instructions and ask for a factual update from permitted areas.

Make a property-specific assessment list

AreaWhat to resolve
Structure and outbuildingsEntry limits, stability questions and authority instructions.
Yard and debrisAsh, damaged structures, disposal instructions and contractor access.
Water supply and wastewaterCurrent public notices and any private-system assessment required.
Indoor surfaces and contentsSmoke, ash, water and heat-related concerns by material.
HVAC and appliancesInspection, cleaning, restoration or replacement before use.
Household needsTemporary living arrangements, health questions and essential replacements.

Wildfire can affect property without burning the main building. Conversely, a standing exterior does not establish the interior condition. Keep the survey grounded in the specific address and any restrictions.

Treat ash, smoke and utilities as separate questions

For a property released for appropriate cleanup, follow the local public-health guidance and the assessor’s scope. Alberta Health Services recommends methods that capture ash, such as wet wiping and HEPA vacuuming, instead of redistributing it. Its guidance also calls for professional input before restarting affected HVAC systems.

Before using water or discarding food and personal items, check the current instructions for the affected community. A clear-looking water supply or an unopened package should not be used as the only safety test. The AHS water and food page explains the concerns after wildfire; local notices determine the action at your property.

Expect recovery work to have several boundaries

Define the inside of the home, exterior surfaces, contents, landscape, debris and private services separately. A contractor quoting indoor cleaning may not include soil, trees, a well, septic equipment or detached structures. Ask for the exclusions and the specialist needed for each unresolved area.

Do not assume a fire-restoration standard covers every wildfire issue. The public IICRC S700 scope expressly identifies wildfire situations among matters not comprehensively addressed. Confirm the assessment approach and expertise for the actual contamination and property conditions.

Organize decisions while the community is busy

  1. Keep official access and utility notices with the property record.
  2. Report the loss and clarify documentation and urgent-work approvals with the insurer.
  3. Identify one contact for each assessment or workstream.
  4. Record a proposed appointment separately from a confirmed attendance date.
  5. Track price and schedule assumptions affected by access, suppliers or community conditions.
  6. Get written disposal and completion records appropriate to the work.

Plan return around needs as well as repairs

Discuss any household health or accessibility concerns with the appropriate professional. Make a practical return list: utilities, essential rooms, medicines, transport, school or work arrangements, and the support needed if access changes again. A construction milestone alone does not settle every household question.

Use the local directory for official contacts, the process worksheet for dependencies and the support guide for the human side of recovery.
