Use the City’s after-fire route for the first handoff
Edmonton’s fire recovery guidance brings together access, basic needs, reports and reconstruction questions. Start there when you need the responsible municipal contact. If the property remains under investigation or has an entry restriction, get explicit instructions before arranging a contractor visit. Write down who provided the instruction, its date and which areas it covers.
Treat utility restoration as its own decision
List the services that are disconnected, who controls them and what the responsible utility or trade needs before reconnection. Do not combine “power restored” with “building ready to occupy” in the same checkbox. If a vacant building will need a protection plan, ask the project lead to explain the approved approach, monitoring and responsibility for changes in conditions.
Reconcile tenant, owner and contents records
For a rental or multi-unit loss, keep the building work separate from each household’s belongings and living arrangements. Name the contact who can authorize access to each space. Ask where removed items will go, how they will be labelled and who can approve disposal. A contractor’s building inventory should not silently replace a household’s own contents record.
What to include in a useful assessment request
| Include | Keep it specific |
|---|---|
| Location and building | Full address, unit, municipality and property type. |
| Known condition | Affected rooms, visible issues and what has not been assessed. |
| Current restrictions | Who controls access and which services or areas are unavailable. |
| Decision needed | The particular assessment, scope question or repair discussion you want. |
Share observations, not guesses about hidden damage. Keep medical records, identification numbers, banking details and unrelated personal information out of an initial enquiry. Use the project worksheet if you need help preparing the brief.
Questions to resolve before authorizing the next stage
0 of 3 checked
If the answer is unknown, name the person who will resolve it and record a follow-up date. A checked list organizes the conversation; it is not permission to enter, a technical assessment or a municipal approval.
