Is the scope clear about structure damage, indoor residues and ongoing smoke?

Separate community return from property readiness

Halifax’s returning-home guidance addresses wildfire recovery. Where an area has been affected, follow the current official direction for that community and the specific restrictions on the property. Permission to return to an area does not answer every question about a damaged building, its utilities or its contents. Record both kinds of instruction in the recovery file.

Name the outside systems that are part of this property

If the site uses a private well, septic installation, fuel equipment, detached structures or other independent systems, list them in the brief. Ask which qualified person or public-health contact should advise on each affected system. Do not assume that an interior cleaning scope includes these assessments. Share the actual observations without attempting to test or restart suspect equipment yourself.

Distinguish indoor residue from continuing outdoor smoke

A wildfire-related enquiry should describe whether the issue is damage to the structure, deposited material inside, ongoing outdoor smoke, or several of these. They call for different questions and may have different boundaries. Ask how the assessor will separate the building treatment from decisions about ventilation, occupancy or public-health advice. Use the wildfire recovery guide for a fuller preparation checklist.

What to include in a useful assessment request

IncludeKeep it specific
Location and buildingFull address, unit, municipality and property type.
Known conditionAffected rooms, visible issues and what has not been assessed.
Current restrictionsWho controls access and which services or areas are unavailable.
Decision neededThe particular assessment, scope question or repair discussion you want.

Share observations, not guesses about hidden damage. Keep medical records, identification numbers, banking details and unrelated personal information out of an initial enquiry. Use the project worksheet if you need help preparing the brief.

Questions to resolve before authorizing the next stage

0 of 3 checked

If the answer is unknown, name the person who will resolve it and record a follow-up date. A checked list organizes the conversation; it is not permission to enter, a technical assessment or a municipal approval.
