Is this address within the City of Vancouver or another municipality?

Which part of the work requires strata or building-manager authorization?

What evidence will be reviewed before concealed areas are closed?

Confirm the municipality before booking the next step

Use the actual civic address. A property described informally as “Vancouver” may be in a different municipality, with a different building department. This page links to the City of Vancouver’s building guidance. If the address is elsewhere, ask that municipality which process applies instead of reusing another city’s permit assumptions.

Map strata and owner responsibilities without guessing coverage

For a strata property, establish the manager’s contact, current access arrangements and the boundary between unit work and common property work. Keep the strata’s building scope, the owner’s improvements and household contents in separate records until the responsible parties confirm them. Ask who authorizes work in a corridor, roof space, service room or shared ventilation system.

Keep moisture evidence connected to the repair

When firefighting water or weather exposure is part of the loss, ask for a material-specific drying record. Tie reading locations to a floor plan or room list, identify inaccessible areas, and record the reason for retaining or removing materials. Before new finishes cover the work, ask the person responsible for closure to review the applicable assessment, drying and inspection evidence.

What to include in a useful assessment request

IncludeKeep it specific
Location and buildingFull address, unit, municipality and property type.
Known conditionAffected rooms, visible issues and what has not been assessed.
Current restrictionsWho controls access and which services or areas are unavailable.
Decision neededThe particular assessment, scope question or repair discussion you want.

Share observations, not guesses about hidden damage. Keep medical records, identification numbers, banking details and unrelated personal information out of an initial enquiry. Use the project worksheet if you need help preparing the brief.

Questions to resolve before authorizing the next stage

0 of 3 checked

If the answer is unknown, name the person who will resolve it and record a follow-up date. A checked list organizes the conversation; it is not permission to enter, a technical assessment or a municipal approval.
