Fire recovery in Ottawa

Use Ottawa’s after-fire guidance to organize the immediate handoff, then build a repair scope around the property’s actual systems and restrictions.

Have the incident reference and latest access instructions been recorded?

Does the scope account for the property’s actual services and outbuildings?

Which decision currently controls the next stage of work?

Capture the incident handoff while details are available

Ottawa Fire Services publishes guidance for the immediate period after a fire. Keep the incident reference, the access instruction and a reliable contact with your recovery file. If someone else makes calls for you, ask them to record the date, person and next action so that instructions are not lost across several conversations.

Describe the property systems that need their own assessment

Include the building type and the services affected in the restoration brief. If this particular property uses a private well, septic system, outbuilding or other independent installation, name it explicitly and ask who assesses it. A general interior cleaning proposal should not be assumed to cover every system on the property. Give professionals the actual observations and restrictions, rather than a guessed diagnosis.

Build the schedule from decisions, not a hoped-for return date

Ask the project lead to identify the next unresolved dependency: access, an assessment, an insurer instruction, design information, a permit or a trade inspection. Put an owner beside that item and agree how updates will be shared. When a date changes, record what changed and what is needed next. This produces a useful schedule even while the full reconstruction duration remains uncertain.

What to include in a useful assessment request

IncludeKeep it specific
Location and buildingFull address, unit, municipality and property type.
Known conditionAffected rooms, visible issues and what has not been assessed.
Current restrictionsWho controls access and which services or areas are unavailable.
Decision neededThe particular assessment, scope question or repair discussion you want.

Share observations, not guesses about hidden damage. Keep medical records, identification numbers, banking details and unrelated personal information out of an initial enquiry. Use the project worksheet if you need help preparing the brief.

Questions to resolve before authorizing the next stage

0 of 3 checked

If the answer is unknown, name the person who will resolve it and record a follow-up date. A checked list organizes the conversation; it is not permission to enter, a technical assessment or a municipal approval.
